Marouane Fellaini lasted just seven minutes after bringing him on in Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat to Tottenham as a replacement for Jesse Lingard but failed to make an impact.
But it appears as though the Belgian midfielder was forced off with a knee injury. Though it was initially unclear if Fellaini had been injured, United boss Jose Mourinho confirmed after the match that the Belgian had suffered a knee issue during his time on the pitch.
Fans had initially thought that Mourinho had showed his incredibly ruthless streak by taking off the former Everton man as a show of his disappointment in his team, who were thoroughly outplayed by the hosts at Wembley and quickly reacted on social media.
United went down 1-0 after just 11 seconds to a Christian Eriksen goal, before Phil Jones put through his own net to double Spurs’ lead.
The Belgian was Introduced after the 63rd minute to replace Jesse Lingard but his time on the pitch was cut short due to a suspected knee injury and was replaced by Ander Herrera after just seven minutes on the pitch.
Fellaini walked off the pitch and straight down the tunnel after being taken off.
United’s official Twitter account tweeted that Fellaini “had picked up an injury”.
And the Belgian was later pictured grimacing and holding his leg, indicating that he had an injury problem.
Jose Mourinho said after the match: “He came off because he had something in his knee. Unlucky for him and unlucky for me. He came on with enthusiasm, but he has an injury in his ligament.“
